About MountainLaurel Handwork
MountainLaurel Handwork, a small
business begun by me, Laura Bergeron, about 11 years ago, has become such a
beloved pursuit, it is hard to believe one can enjoy 'work' so much.
Begun as a beaded jewelry business in 1993, it soon turned to metalwork, silversmithing to be exact. The artistry of a pierced and engraved sterling silver piece of jewelry fed my urge to design something beautiful. However, a competing passion for antiques, in particular all things Victorian (including our home), led to a perfect blend for jewelry design. I have most definitely found my niche in this work. The beautiful old things I use to create my jewelry include antique buttons, antique cufflinks, Victorian era postcard ephemera, 1920's typewriter keys, and sterling silver salt spoons. The artistry in these Victorian Era items needs little help from me, other than to highlight their beauty in jewelry settings that will spark comments and evoke the elegance of a bygone era.
Your jewelry will arrive in clean, restored condition. Maintenance is simple & in many cases, not an issue. Never immerse in water as many old metal buttons have inner layers of paper, or incorporate steel construction. The best course is to use a hand-held all-metals polishing cloth, usually obtainable at hardware stores. Where I live, I use the Cape Cod Polishing cloth to maintain a lustre. The bracelet findings (i.e. blanks, jumprings, clasps, pin backs, etc.) used are silver and gold plated, and seldom tarnish.
Enjoy your visit here. I would love to hear from you. If you see something you like and want more, I can hand-select comparable items to send along with the pictured item you like. Due to the nature of the antique items used to make this jewelry, exact duplicates are usually impossible. There may be some exceptions. Please E-Mail me with questions.
Always take a close look at the individual components of the jewelry. The elegance of the artistry in the antique buttons and other items used will amaze you. The buttons in the fabric stores of today don't even come close. This jewelry will not only bring beauty to you, but also the energy and history of a lifestyle so far removed from us today.
